about
This song Annabelle was written by Jane Ray in 1996. Jane shared her song with Kate Wolf (of course not the Kate Wolf who passed away in 1986) who added it to her repertoire.
While I was recording my album The Old Captain's September in Provincetown in 1998, Kate, who played bass on some of my songs, showed me her version of Annabelle and I immediately loved it. We recorded Kate singing & playing it and I added bass and another guitar.
In 1999 I made this arrangement for one guitar and vocal, inspired by Kate's version. I used it as an audition tape for a 50 cent gig at a coffee shop but the guy didn't like it; that approach to music making never became my chosen path. I guess I really just like to write and record.
Like so many of my songs, Annabelle has just been sitting around as a demo which I thought I'd eventually get around to making into an official recording, but I really love this recording and I don't think I could do any better.
lyrics
Three o'clock
The sound of your breathing woke me up
I thought you were leaving
Like a shot in the dark
Like a knife I was right, Annabelle
Annabelle, don't go with her
Annabelle, you just gotta stay
If I sleep again, I'll wake up
When it's time to feed the dogs
And braid your hair
Oh, Annabelle
God help me if you're not there
I thought I heard you go for the door
I thought I felt the sheets drop to the floor
I thought you said you don't want me anymore
Annabelle, don't go with her
Annabelle, please stay
If I sleep again, I'll wake up
When it's time to feed the dogs
And braid your hair
Oh, Annabelle
God help me if you're not there
Annabelle, don't go with her
Annabelle, you just gotta stay
It's morning and the dogs are here
I'll braid your hair
Oh, Annabelle
