I want to wake you up in the middle of the night Brush my lips on your face Take you in my arms to another place But first I'd better introduce myself I want to touch your hand, breathe you in I want to make you smile Take a trip to paradise for a little while But first I'd better introduce myself The very thought of you makes my heart sing Like an April breeze on the wings of spring I'd like to show you the tender side of me Though I'm not sure who you are, and I know you don't know me I want to know the smell of your skin In the morning as we rise And to continue dreaming, though I'll never know unless I ... First introduce myself Oh, first I'd better introduce myself

Oh little fish on the sand How did you get yourself strand You don't belong on the land Was it accidentally That you fell from the sea Or did you arrange for the change They'll say that you don't belong there They'll say that you are of the mare They'll say .... You're all alone You'll dry into bone Oh, oh .... Perhaps you'll find a pond Where you will be fond And others will be fond of you Or maybe a stream One that might seem To remind you Or maybe a lake Many friends there to make The acquaintance of you Then maybe back to the sea Stranger places could be Oh, to be in a place that suits you Oh, a place that suits you Oh, a place that suits you Oh please, get out of the sand Please get off of the land Get yourself unstrand Oh please, get out of the sand Please get off of the land And get yourself unstrand Oh, oh ....

I hope she remembers the onions 'Cause cooking without them Is no fun for me And I really need some For this recipe Here come the tears It's been a whole year This onion's for me I hope she remembers the eggs 'Cause omelets without them They simply can't be And I really need some For this recipe Remember the eggs Remember those eggs The eggman's for me I hope she remembers the wine 'Cause dinner without it It just isn't fine And I really need some To soak in my mind Remember the wine Remember the onions And remember those eggs (Remember ... remember ... remember) Don't forget ... Oh, and one more thing ... I hope she remembers the cheese Because life without it Just is not complete (no!) And I really need some Despite my disease Remember the cheese Please remember the cheese This cheese is for me

I've been waiting for so long For my destiny to come along I believe one needs love to be complete And that lifelong romance is not obsolete I'm looking for a heart of gold Who's not too young, not too old Sense of humor a must, down to earth and mature Prefer tall, dark and handsome ... financially secure So many fish in the reservoir ISO possible LTR Here's me, well do I even have to say ... Enjoy movies, travel, dining out, music, And calling in sick on Monday If you're smart and love nature you'll probably love me Of course friendship first, 'cuz you're honest and trustworthy Help me newspaper registrar ISO possible LTR I know that you just can't wait to find me And I'm HWP Perhaps I've seen too many movies and I've been fooled Perhaps my heart is wrongly schooled Perhaps my desires are misruled I've searched far and wide but no cigar ISO possible LTR ~but still~ I hope for luck and I wish on a star I keep my lofty dreams safe in a jar My love, are you out there? I hope that you are ISO possible LTR

We both got one cheek in Doin' thee hokey pokey Turn yourself around Turn yourself around My heart has inflated so soon I can't underrate this deep swoon And I delight in your soft glance Provoking romance Let's rip up cupid's book But let's not be too hasty For rust shall come soon enough Oh, I see it's already come too doggone soon Maybe if we think and wish and hope and pray It might come true Baby then there wouldn't be a single thing we couldn't do I wanna practice devotion I wanna practice devotion I wanna practice devotion I wanna practice devotion I wanna practice devotion, yes I ... I wanna practice devotion Oh, I do

Driving me home After the first white Russian of my life You let me know just how lucky a guy I am Yet, what a fool am I to indulge intoxicating vices such as love Standing barefoot in the chilly late-September dewy grass Takin' a leak under a striking starry sky And hearing you say that you like me so much ... Such an evening of memories will stick with me And I hope that you remember ... I'm a willing passenger on your ride, baby I'm a willing passenger on your ride

Love once close, now far away My heart left in disarray Nothing seems to sway me from my crying Once full of life and joy and love I had a chance to be part of Something with her - so satisfying I thought her love would last a while I didn't know it was her style To go on foolin' me - lying How could she dissolve it all Without resolve at all? I call to hear her voice I know it well It's not an easy choice But deep down I shall dwell How could she dissolve it all Without resolve at all? I didn't even get to say goodbye Before she had some other guy She doesn't care how that did affect me (ouch) I took her word to be my friend But that's a tear that will not mend I don't believe she does respect me Oh, How could she dissolve it all Without resolve at all? Still I miss her voice The sweet things she'd say It's not an easy choice But I must stay away

Strangers will invade the heart Keeping it from pure A golden apple digested down Soon finds its way to the sewer Flexing your karma in front of the mirror Well color me impressed, but you're droopin' There must be some other way to say that you were lyin' Still lacking the feathers needed for flyin' The abode of truth is in your heart Remember this my bold fledgling It's a beautiful thing to partake In attempts to beat the odds I must admit I stumbled into it Like a clumsy clod Well falling in love, my friends, is like a fart It feels so good, but then it dissipates apart We learn how to live and love by tryin' Still lacking the feathers needed for flyin' The abode of truth is in your heart Remember this my bold fledgling And that flyer you put on my windshield Telling me all about God It's dried up and blown away What a shame (what a sham) A pipedream ... or a brainstorm As a substitute for love I hate to say it, but I told you so Farewell to spring You call me friend, aw but that sentiment is dyin' Still lacking the feathers needed for flyin' The abode of truth is in your heart Remember this ... (remember!) The abode of truth is in your heart Remember this my bold fledgling

Put down that vile; stop taking notes You're so sexy in that lab coat Just because I sweep up the floor behind you Doesn't mean I'm not sexy too Well, pardon me for staring As I gauge your allure by increasing increments You have such a way with sensitive instruments Though there's barely a detectable trace Of romance There's an experiment I'd like to perform Given the chance So remove your protective eyewear And kiss me you serious fool

Oh, where the honey flows Is where my boat goes Oh I love fruit from the tree And I love the taste of honey Oh sweet thing in the north I love your apple tree And I need your honey in my tea Aw the road's a quiet place And that's where I found me And that's where I found your apple tree There's a honey moat And an apple boat that's mine Oh I love fruit from the tree And I love the taste of honey Ooh the fall is all around Even falling me It's a cool, crisp kiss for me I can hardly believe How sweet the fruit can be Oh I love your apple tree Oooh I love your apple tree I love your apple tree Please save the apples for me Apple pie for me (please) Oh those northern apples ~ they taste so sweet Crisp and gold like honey

Break my heart for I am devoid Shatter me, I must be destroyed For I have come to think of love as my own To be the chemist of volatile wont To play out the indulgent romaunt I confess I've failed to rest in grace To stand in love is to stare at the sun My vision lost to oblivion All I know boiled, burned and gone By love ~ set back in grace By love ~ recognizing my place By love ~ ravished, yet refined If you're listening, if you're awake Your heart has been made to break To the beauty of the world quite regularly Your heart is made to break To burst open and openly ache So that ever more wonders you may hold there Set back in grace I stare at the sun Stand in my place ... I'm gone

about

Razed On Love is a long-planned concept album, the songs for which were largely inspired by my love of Brazilian bossa nova music. The songs were being written during the time I was making The Old Captain's September. It was a project ten years in the making.

All music & lyrics by Matthew Sanborn except:
"Wouldn't It Be Nice" exerpt; music & Lyrics by Brian Wilson & Tony Asher
"First I'd Better Introduce Myself" music & lyrics by Zoe Lewis;
arranged & tweaked by MTS
"Love is the Answer" music & lyrics by Todd Rundgren
"Black Eyed Susan" traditional arranged by MTS

On the original CD, "Love is the Answer" was a secret bonus track.
"I Liked It The Way It Used To Be" was an outtake - too long for the album.

Intermittently recorded at The Highschool Bedroom in Madison, WI by MTS March 1999 through November 2003. Some tracks recorded in living rooms in Athens, GA. Cello tracks recorded in a Michigan motel room.
